The world often distinguishes between cat lovers and dog enthusiasts, yet Walter Chandoha, renowned as the 20th century’s preeminent pet photographer, comfortably embraced both. He appreciated the distinct allure and personality of each animal, delighting in their diversity through his lens over a career that spanned more than seven decades. While creating his highly praised TASCHEN book "Cats," Chandoha carefully selected his most cherished dog images, laying plans for a potential follow-up by organizing countless contact sheets, prints, and color transparencies with meticulous attention. Although Chandoha passed away in 2019 at the remarkable age of 98, his influence endures in a striking successor devoted to dogs. The initial chapter, "In the Studio," emphasizes formal portraits; followed by "Strike a Pose," where dogs charm the camera; "Out and About" captures their playful outings, often alongside Chandoha’s own children; "Best in Show" employs his journalistic eye to document classic dog shows reminiscent of the Mad Men era; "Tails from the City" features dogs exploring mid-century New York; and the final chapter, "Country Dogs," returns to serene rural landscapes, fields, and beaches. "Dogs" stands as an unrestrained photographic homage to these beloved and faithful companions.
