The Story of Kullervo

The world has been introduced to a previously undiscovered piece by J.R.R. Tolkien, revealing a poignant fantasy tale of a young man named Kullervo. From a tragic lineage, Kullervo, son of Kalervo, emerges as one of Tolkien's most somber and ill-fated figures. Known as 'Hapless Kullervo' by Tolkien, he is a desolate orphan endowed with mystical abilities and is inevitably drawn to a sorrowful end. Raised under the roof of the ominous magician Untamo, who was responsible for his father’s death and his mother's abduction, Kullervo faces repeated murder attempts from Untamo during his childhood. Tolkien described The Story of Kullervo as the spark for his own myth-making, a critical part of his First Age mythology. Furthermore, Kullervo serves as a precursor to Túrin Turambar, the ill-fated hero entwined in incest from The Silmarillion.
