Geoffrey Chaucer, born around 1340, was a multi-talented figure involved in various roles such as courtier, diplomat, revenue collector, and overseer of building projects, among others. He also fulfilled personal roles as a husband, father, and friend. Amidst these diverse responsibilities, Chaucer devoted himself to writing. His literary output was not limited to English but also encompassed French and Italian influences, thanks to his understanding of these languages. This allowed him to engage deeply with the works of significant French poets like Eustache Deschamps, as well as Italian luminaries like Petrarch, Dante, and Boccaccio, thereby enriching his own literary expression.Chaucer’s ambitious project, The Canterbury Tales, initiated in the 1390s and left incomplete at his death in October 1400, drew inspiration from Boccaccio’s Decameron. The narrative follows 30 pilgrims gathering at the Tabard Inn in Southwark, preparing for a journey to the renowned shrine of St. Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral. The inn’s host proposes that the pilgrims entertain each other with stories during their travels, offering a complementary meal to the best storyteller upon their return. The tales, varying from humorous comedies and moral narratives to chivalric romances, are infused with Chaucer’s unique blend of wit and irony. While the characters are based on traditional medieval estates satire, they remain identifiable as distinct individuals to Chaucer's audience.Chaucer's work achieves a comprehensive portrayal of the cultural and social landscape of his era, following the tradition of Italian proto-Renaissance writers. In the years after his passing, Chaucer’s literary contributions were celebrated by successive generations of authors who enshrined him within the nascent canon of English literature, earning him the enduring title of ‘the Father of English Literature.’
