"Carte Blanche" showcases the intersection of art and commerce in the works of Helmut Newton, who blended his commercial and magazine photography seamlessly. Newton, known for his ironic self-description as “a gun for hire,” has his commercial photography immortalized in a book by June Newton, now revised by the Helmut Newton Foundation. In a 2004 Newsweek interview, Newton stated, "Some people's photography is an art. Mine is not. If they happen to be exhibited in a gallery or a museum, that's fine. But that's not why I do them." These words, though surprising from a 20th-century icon, underscore his straightforward approach to image-making. His work, powerful and visually arresting, often transcends conventional categories. By denying the label of "art," Newton offered us the freedom to view it as such, evidenced by the numerous exhibitions featuring his photography."A Gun for Hire" compiles a comprehensive selection of Newton’s fashion catalog photography from the 1960s to 2003, highlighting collaborations with brands like BiBA, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Versace, Thierry Mugler, Blumarine, Villeroy & Boch, and Absolut Vodka. It also includes his final editorial pieces for US and Italian Vogue, representing his extensive career as a commissioned photographer. The book features an introduction by Matthias Harder and insights from prominent figures such as Pierre Bergé, Tom Ford, Josephine Hart, June Newton, and Anna Wintour.
