Throughout the 20th century, the perception of 19th-century art became skewed, shaped to fit the aesthetic preferences of those intrigued by the avant-garde's formal innovations. This has led to a surprising revelation of how limited the common understanding is regarding the creations of that earlier period and the interests of its artists. In an effort to illuminate these forgotten aspects, a conference was held in March 2007, co-organized by the National Museum in Cracow and the Art History Institute of the Jagiellonian University. This gathering aimed at illustrating, particularly through history painting, the extensive network of relationships and interactions prevalent in 19th-century Europe. (Based on the PREFACE by Barbara Ciciora)
