The protagonist, Zakhar Pavlovich, transitions from a background in traditional crafts to a role as a train mechanic, driven by his belief in the industrial revolution's transformative potential. His adopted son, Sasha Dvanov, fully embraces the revolution, anticipating a complete transformation of language, life, and every aspect of existence, from the soil to the sun. Joining forces with Stepan Kopionkin, who rides the formidable cart horse named Strength of the Proletariat, they traverse the steppe, encountering a variety of opposition and visionary figures. Eventually, they arrive in the isolated town of Chevengur, where communism seems to have triumphed with the absence of anything non-communist. However, even here, the idealistic vision begins to fade.
