For over half a century, Frank Frazetta has held a commanding presence in the realm of fantasy art, with the worth of his creations continuously soaring alongside the admiration from his fervent followers. Each year, his masterpieces surpass previous auction records, highlighted by a Lancer books cover from 1967, featuring Conan, which fetched an astonishing $13.5 million by September 2025. Frazetta, born in Brooklyn in 1928 to a Sicilian immigrant family, had an intriguing life as a minor league athlete, small-time criminal, and noted charmer, adorned with movie star looks and extraordinary artistic ability. Despite describing himself as lazy and troublesome, he had a knack for beginning his artwork the night before deadlines and completing them within hours, delivering masterpieces that, although often still drying, never failed to astound.Commencing his career in comics at just 16, Frazetta worked with the infamous EC Comics and transitioned to crafting film posters, as well as covers for Tarzan and Conan pulp magazines. His journey also included creating magazine covers for National Lampoon, despite clashes with the editors over “hippy politics,” co-directing the animated film "Fire & Ice" with Ralph Bakshi, and remarkably, teaching himself to paint with his left hand after a stroke at 68 disabled his right. As he remarked in the 1970s, he always had a physical awareness, having encountered real-life inspirations for his muscular, macho characters in Brooklyn. Frazetta revolutionized the depiction of fantasy heroes, making them more formidable and vividly realistic, while their female counterparts were crafted as powerful yet believably human figures. Collectively, his art possesses an addictiveness akin to potato chips, now accessible in an appealing, compact, and affordable collection.
