The tragic events in Markowa serve as a stark illustration of the horrific actions carried out by the German forces during World War II. While this atrocity, like many others, has not been fully acknowledged, the incident on March 24, 1944, exemplifies both grave injustice and the profound capacity for human goodness. In a manner reminiscent of the Good Samaritan from biblical teachings, Józef and Wiktoria Ulma made the courageous decision to assist individuals of different nationalities and religions. Their unwavering commitment to the biblical principle of loving one's neighbor outweighed the severe risk of execution, a penalty imposed on Poles who sheltered Jews. Tragically, they paid the ultimate price for their noble actions, sacrificing their lives and those of their children. However, the Ulmas were not isolated in their bravery. During World War II, approximately a thousand Poles lost their lives while protecting Jewish people. Every year on March 24, we honor their extraordinary courage on the National Day of Remembrance of Poles who Rescued Jews under German Occupation, aligning the commemoration with the anniversary of the Markowa massacre. Efforts continue to respectfully remember each Polish individual who undertook this perilous act of saving Jews, ensuring their legacy is acknowledged appropriately.
