The Little Book of Tom. Bikers

Marlon Brando's iconic portrayal of Johnny in "The Wild One" in 1953, with his black leather Perfecto jacket and rebellious demeanor, left an indelible mark on motorcycle culture. Just a year later, Tom of Finland took inspiration from this aesthetic, steering away from brown leather to craft his own vision of daring, hyper-masculine figures clad in sleek black leather. These powerful figures, complete with roaring engines between their legs, resonated with the spirit of rebellion and individuality. The Satyrs Motorcycle Club, recognized as the first gay outlaw club, embraced this bold new look in 1954, blurring the lines between fantasy and reality presented in Tom's artwork. True to his creative prowess, Tom personalized these figures with distinctive touches—leather jodhpurs, knee-high boots, and custom leather caps, branding each motorcycle with the name “Tom.”His creations gained wider recognition when they first appeared as “Motorcycle Boys” in the Winter 1958 issue of Physique Pictorial, later gracing the cover in April 1960. From that point on, bikers became a staple in Tom’s work, captivating both his American audience and aligning with his burgeoning fascination. In 1968, he introduced Kake, a character embodying the ultimate biker persona, vividly chronicling a range of adventures across 26-panel stories. Tom’s personal attire mirrored Kake's distinctive look, favoring a black leather jacket, white t-shirt, jeans, and imposing boots until his final days. "The Little Book of Tom: Bikers" is a celebration of these early depictions, showcasing scenes from Physique Pictorial, captivating biker stories, and vivid illustrations of powerful men reveling in their masculinity, all within 192 pages filled with the allure of leather, denim, and high boots astride their motorbikes.
