This book represents a significant achievement of a twenty-year collaborative research effort focused on Indian literature and art. The initiative brings together expertise from the South Asian Studies departments of five European universities: the University of Milan, Charles University in Prague, Jagiellonian University in Krakow, University of Warsaw, and University of Cagliari. This collective endeavor culminated in the International Seminar titled "Journeys and Travellers, Routes and Destinations in Indian Literature and Art," which was hosted at the University of Warsaw from September 21-23, 2017.
This publication is thoughtfully divided into two volumes, owing to the extensive and varied thematic content of the submissions. The first volume presents 13 scholarly articles predominantly grounded in Sanskrit and Pali sources. In contrast, the second volume offers 12 articles that draw primarily from vernacular Indian language sources. Each volume organizes its content in a loosely chronological sequence based on the dating of the sources, although the languages and specific subjects of the papers also inform their arrangement. This structuring invites readers on a temporal journey, fitting seamlessly with the publication's overarching theme.
