In the context of Polish historiography, geohistory has yet to establish itself as a central area of research. Although traditionally on the periphery of interest, recent developments suggest a shift is underway. A significant contribution to this movement is the book "Studies and Materials on the Geohistory of Galicia," edited by Tomasz Kargol. This volume, which has undergone peer-review, is the product of the 'Seminar on the Geohistory of Galicia (1772-1918)' Research Platform. This international and interdisciplinary team operates from the Institute of History at the Jagiellonian University and collaborates with the Institute of Geography and Spatial Management at the same university, along with the Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine in Lviv. The group comprises researchers from various nations and academic fields, underscoring the importance of integrating geographical sciences into the study of history. Given the research topics covered, such integration seems essential.
This compilation, curated by T. Kargol, represents a vital addition to Polish historiography by addressing a critical gap in the literature. Its value lies in presenting a nuanced perspective on historical developments, aligning with the core tenets of geohistory. While geography's role has been prominently acknowledged in military, trade, and exploration histories, this publication sheds light on new and previously untapped sources and research possibilities concerning Galicia. It not only spotlights research areas where geohistory methodologies are applicable but also encourages historians to delve into this historiographic niche. This approach is equally applicable to the broader Polish territories during the 19th century. Geographical spaces underpin societal and individual existence, making them a focal point for historical inquiry.
From the review by Dr. hab. Damian Szymczak, UAM Professor.
