He completed his undergraduate studies in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Brasenose College, Oxford. Following this, he advanced to St. Antony’s College, where he earned both a master's and a doctorate in philosophy with a focus on international relations and strategic studies. His academic journey also included a year at Harvard as a Kennedy Scholar, as well as a year at King's College London.

After defending his doctoral thesis, he continued his career at Oxford, where he was involved in a research project and taught international relations and strategic studies. He also served as an academic supervisor at the Department of Political Science at University College for a year. His teaching career extended to Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, where he lectured for two years and also taught at the University of Exeter, where he held an honorary fellowship. In 2004, he joined the Defence Studies Department at the Joint Services Command and Staff College.
