Kelsea Glynn, the rightful heir to the Tearling throne, has lived her life in secrecy following the assassination of her mother, a queen whose vanity matched her lack of wisdom. Her mother’s disastrous reign ended abruptly, leaving Tearling under the superficial governance of Kelsea's uncle, who acts merely as the indulgent pawn of the Red Queen, a powerful sorceress ruling the adjacent land of Mortmesme with an iron grip. On the occasion of her nineteenth birthday, the loyal remnants of her mother's guard—dedicated protectors of the monarchy—emerge to escort Kelsea from her hidden refuge, ready to restore the line of succession to its rightful path.
