The Office of Gardens and Ponds

The tranquil village of Shimae is thrown into chaos following the unexpected drowning of Katsuro, the master carp-catcher, in the murky depths of the Kusagawa River. With his passing, the vital task of transporting the cherished carp to the imperial palace falls to his widow, Miyuki, the only person left in the village knowledgeable about carp. Entrusted with this responsibility, Miyuki must face the daunting task of delivering the carp, essential for maintaining the village’s vital patronage. Carrying the substantial weight of the fish in baskets slung over her shoulders, she embarks on a treacherous journey.

Throughout her travels, Miyuki encounters a myriad of intriguing personalities—from prostitutes and innkeepers to sinister warlords and priests—each adding to the complexity of her expedition. She faces numerous challenges and threats, as others are also keenly interested in the valuable carp. Upon reaching her destination, the Office of Gardens and Ponds, Miyuki quickly realizes that her trials are not yet behind her. Within this institution's facade of elegance and tradition lies a maze of politics and elitism that she must navigate to ensure a successful return to Shimae.
