Nine-year-old Oskar Schell possesses many talents and interests: he is an inventor, an amateur entomologist, a Francophile, a letter writer, a pacifist, a natural historian, a percussionist, a romantic, a Great Explorer, a jeweler, a detective, a vegan, and a collector of butterflies. Following the tragic death of his father during the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center, Oskar embarks on a quest to uncover the story behind a mysterious key he finds hidden in his father’s closet. This search takes him on an unexpected adventure through New York’s five boroughs, weaving him into the lives of various strangers and delving into historical events like the bombings of Dresden and Hiroshima. Along the way, Oskar initiates an introspective journey that ultimately draws him nearer to finding some sense of peace.
