Professor, Minister, Judge - Krzysztof Skubiszewski 1926-2010

The determined Skubiszewski was adamant in February 1990 about Poland's participation in the Paris conference concerning German reunification, focusing on external borders and matters impacting Poland. This persistence led to a significant milestone in November 1990 when Skubiszewski and Genscher signed a treaty that solidified the German-Polish border. Skubiszewski’s foresight in acknowledging the possibility of change was evidenced later when, in 2000, under United Nations guidance, Portugal and Indonesia agreed to a referendum for East Timor. The people of East Timor chose independence over integration with Indonesia, marking a pivotal moment in the region's history, with East Timor becoming a member of the United Nations as the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste in September 2002. Reflecting on Skubiszewski's legacy, it seems apt that his career culminated as President of the Iran-US Claims Tribunal. Despite the challenges inherent in such a role, he was met with respect and eventually deep regard from his colleagues. Therefore, it is most appropriate to honor the extraordinary contributions of this remarkable man.
