The volume aptly reflects its title by being divided into two interconnected sections. The first section explores Polish research on American art from the 20th and early 21st centuries, splitting this era into two distinct periods. The initial period spans from 1913 to the outbreak of the Second World War, beginning with the Armory Show, which marked the American introduction to the European avant-garde. It continues through the emergence of New York Dadaism and Surrealism, encompassing the endeavors of American artists influenced by European movements, and culminating in the 1930s influx of European artists to America. The subsequent period, from 1945 to the present, examines Abstract Expressionism and the Neo-expressionism of the 1970s and 1980s, along with Modernism, Postmodernism, Conceptualism, and Post-conceptualism, while also considering new media art and its impact on European art. Core topics include art theory, criticism, and the lives of artists, alongside a re-examination of exhibitions, education, museums, institutions, and the art press. The second section focuses on the contributions of Polish artists and those of Polish descent, highlighting Polish institutional activities in the USA, artist exchanges, exhibitions, and the interplay between American and Polish art. This section aims to provide an updated overview of the Polish artistic community's history and the work of Polish artists, especially those from older and middle generations. The English publication of the conference materials fosters Polish involvement in international pan-Atlantic research, emphasizing how émigré-created new art groups influence their countries of origin through creative expression. This volume enhances the existing documentation of Polish art and the lives of Polish artists abroad, a subject of ongoing research by the Polish Institute of World Art Studies and other Polish entities.
