Frederick Welin, once a celebrated surgeon, now lives in solitude on a secluded island in the Swedish archipelago after a career-ending scandal twelve years prior, when he attempted to hide a tragic error during surgery. As they travel through the stark, snowy landscape, Welin reminisces about his humble beginnings and the woman he once deserted. Upon arrival, Harriet reveals an unexpected surprise. "Italian Shoes" captivates while also unsettling the reader. Through the flawed character of Welin, author Henning Mankell thoughtfully explores themes of aging and mortality. Much like his earlier work "Depths," this novel presents a poignant and powerful examination of human frailty.
