Until the papacy of Paul VI, the ceremony for a newly elected Pope taking charge of the Basilica of St. John Lateran included a traditional pause during the procession following his coronation. This stop occurred near Monte Giordano, close to the Jewish ghetto, where the Jewish community and its leaders would meet the Pope. During this meeting, they would kneel before him, presenting a scroll of the Law.
