The topic of individuals challenging societal norms and adopting roles typically associated with the opposite gender has not widely captivated researchers' interest. To address this gap, the editors organized a conference titled "Na przekór konwencjom. Nieszablonowe role społeczne kobiet i mężczyzn od czasów nowożytnych do 1945 roku / Against conventions. Uncommon social roles of women and men from early modern times to 1945." This event took place from November 30 to December 1, 2017, at the Historical Institute of the University of Wrocław, Poland. The conference aimed not only to further the scope of gender studies and enhance its global perspective but also to mark significant milestones in the history of women's suffrage across Europe. Despite the fact that women have more frequently confronted societal constraints dictated by the customs and norms of different eras, which was evident in many of the paper submissions, the experiences of men dealing with similar challenges were deemed equally significant to explore. This publication stems from the 2017 conference and delves into topics spanning from the sixteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. It is structured into three thematic sections: "The public, the private, the intimate," "Activity in the labour market," and "Stereotypes and perceptions."
