The first illustrated book dedicated to celebrating the extraordinary stories and achievements of twenty courageous women mountaineers worldwide has been published. As the popularity of climbing and mountaineering rises globally, the presence of women in these activities has also grown significantly. This pioneering work, titled "Mountaineering Women," is a unique collection of inspiring and often unexpected stories that honor the accomplishments of female climbers from around the world. Throughout history, from the Amazigh of the Atlas Mountains to the peaks of the Inca Empire in the Andes, women have dared to venture across the most intimidating mountains. When mountaineering became a sport in the West during the 19th century, determined Victorian women defied societal norms to conquer Europe’s Alpine heights. Despite their significant contributions, women's stories have been underrepresented in mountaineering literature. This book aims to shift the focus away from the traditional tales of male explorers and highlight the diverse backgrounds and experiences of these women. Each story is paired with a commissioned ink illustration and striking black-and-white photographs, while three sections of 16 pages each feature breathtaking images of the mountaineers in action and the majestic mountain landscapes. The book also includes an insightful introduction by Nandini Purandare and a concluding essay by Ashima Shiraishi, discussing the future of mountaineering.
