The Council of Lithuanian Jews 1623-1764

The Council of Lithuanian Jews, also known as the Lithuanian Vaad, served as the primary representative organization for Jews in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Functioning from 1623 to 1764, this council was integral to various aspects of Jewish communal life. It played a pivotal role in advocating for Jewish interests in both local and national legislative assemblies, as well as in the courts of the monarchy and influential nobles. Through its work, the Council highlighted the unique identity of Lithuanian Jewry, which extended beyond local communities and shared a broader sense of unity.Anna Michałowska-Mycielska, a historian at the Institute of History at Warsaw University, explores the operations and significance of this Council within the broader Jewish society of the era. Her research focuses on the history and culture of Jews within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the 16th to 18th centuries. Michałowska-Mycielska has published several works, including "Między demokracją a oligarchią. Władze gmin żydowskich w Poznaniu i Swarzędzu" (from the mid-17th to late-18th century) and its English version "The Jewish Community. Authority and Social Control in Poznań and Swarzędz, 1650-1793." She also compiled source texts in "Gminy żydowskie w dawnej Rzeczypospolitej" and documented historical records in works such as "Pinkas kahału swarzędzkiego (1734-1830)" and "Pinkas kahału boćkowskiego (1714-1817)." Her insightful analysis offers a detailed picture of Jewish political and social dynamics during this period.
