Rachel Louise Snyder - sylwetka autora

Rachel Louise Snyder is a noted author with several influential works to her name, including "Fugitive Denim: A Moving Story of People and Pants in the Borderless World of Global Trade," "What We've Lost is Nothing," and "No Visible Bruises: What We Don’t Know About Domestic Violence Can Kill Us." Her articles and essays have been featured in prominent publications such as The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Slate, Salon, The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, The Chicago Tribune, and The New Republic. Since 1991, Snyder has visited more than fifty countries. In 1998, she explored Tibet, Nepal, and India for two months, during which she had the opportunity to interview the Dalai Lama. By 2000, she was driving across Cuba at the dawn of the new millennium. Among her unique experiences, she once attended a late-night fashion show in the desert near Niamey, Niger — a tidbit yet to be woven into her stories. Her reporting has also taken her to scenes of significant natural disasters, like Honduras during Hurricane Mitch in 1998 and Indonesia after the Asian tsunami in 2005.

Snyder relocated from Chicago to Phnom Penh in 2003, where she became a valuable contributor to public radio programs such as "Marketplace" and "All Things Considered." There, she adopted a local street dog and welcomed her daughter into the world. The dog, intriguingly, has quite the spirited temperament. After spending six years in Cambodia, Snyder moved to Washington, DC, where she developed and hosted a popular three-minute segment titled "The Global Guru," broadcasted on over 100 NPR stations nationwide. The program's excellence was recognized in 2010 with a "Zeitfunk Award" for being the third most licensed interstitial by the Public Radio Exchange (PRX).

Her debut book, "Fugitive Denim," was highlighted on "This American Life" and earned her a 2006 Lowell Thomas Award from the Overseas Press Club. The release of her novel, "What We've Lost is Nothing," in 2014 was met with acclaim, as Library Journal declared her "an outstanding new voice in fiction." Her latest book, "No Visible Bruises," published in May 2019, was honored with the Lukas Work-In-Progress Award by Columbia School of Journalism and Harvard’s Nieman Foundation. Additionally, Snyder was named a Guggenheim Fellow in 2020. Her academic credentials include a Bachelor of Arts from North Central College and a Master of Fine Arts from Emerson College. Currently, Rachel Louise Snyder enriches the next generation of writers as an Associate Professor of Creative Writing and Journalism at American University in Washington, DC.
