Frank Pollard finds himself waking up in a dim alley, with no memory beyond knowing his name and a lurking sense of peril. Over the following days, he develops a growing anxiety about sleeping, as each time he awakens, his hands are stained with blood, and his pockets contain disturbing, bewildering items. In a state of panic and confusion, Frank enlists the help of Bobby and Julie Dakota, a detective duo, to unravel the mystery of his troubling amnesiac episodes. What seems like a straightforward case soon pulls them into deepening shadows, where they come face to face with a malevolent and hateful entity pursuing Frank. Their investigation puts their lives at risk, as well as the life of Julie's kind-hearted brother, Thomas, who has Down's syndrome. To Thomas, death signifies the 'bad place' from which there is no return, but as events unfold, they all come to realize that there are equally horrific places in the realm of the living, so drenched in malevolence that, in comparison, death might almost seem like a reprieve.
