Peter Beard

Peter Beard (1938-2020) was an artistic polymath whose life mirrored the diverse facets of his creative journey. As an artist, diarist, collector, and writer, he seamlessly transformed his life experiences into captivating art. From a young age, Beard's illustrated diaries became the foundation of a distinguished art career that positioned him prominently on the global art stage. His collaborations included luminaries like Francis Bacon, Salvador Dalí, and Andy Warhol, while his scientific partnerships featured figures such as Dr. Norman Borlaug, Dr. Richard Laws, and Alistair Graham. His friendships and travels with cultural icons like Truman Capote, Terry Southern, and the Rolling Stones further enriched his artistic perspective. Beard's foray into fashion, characterized by his work with Vogue models like Veruschka, led him to bridge the worlds of style and art between Africa and the United States. His connection to Kenya deepened in the early 1960s when he befriended Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen) and acquired land adjacent to her farm. There, he committed to documenting the region's vibrant but stressed ecosystems, capturing the plight of Tsavo's elephants amidst the burgeoning human population and environmental strain. His works, including the arresting book "The End of the Game," often starkly depicted the realities of animal demise and human encroachment.
