The intersection of Surrealism and Symbolism finds an intriguing expression in Salvador Dalí's tarot deck. It all began when Albert Broccoli, producer of the James Bond film "Live and Let Die," approached Dalí to design a unique set of tarot cards. Although the formal collaboration did not materialize, Dalí, motivated by his wife Gala's fascination with mysticism, continued to develop the cards on his own. This passion project culminated in a limited art edition in 1984, which sold out quickly, marking Dalí as the first celebrated artist to produce a wholly original tarot deck. Drawing inspiration from Western art masterpieces, including some of his creations, Dalí infused them with his signature surreal and witty style. This collection forms a vibrant tapestry of European art history. The renowned publisher TASCHEN has reissued all 78 cards in a new edition, accompanied by a booklet from esteemed German tarot expert Johannes Fiebig. The booklet provides insights into Dalí’s life and the creation process, detailed analyses of each card's design and symbolism, and user-friendly guides for performing tarot readings, making it accessible to beginners.
