Edgar Allan Poe came into the world on January 19, 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts, as the son of traveling actors. His early life was marked by hardship with his father abandoning the family and his mother's subsequent death. Taken in by John Allan, a tobacco farmer from Virginia, he adopted the name Edgar Allan Poe. Although he excelled academically at the University of Virginia, he was also known for accumulating debts due to his penchant for gambling. The tension this caused strained his relationship with his foster father, prompting Poe to set off on his own.In 1836, Poe married his cousin, Virginia. Despite his multiple pursuits—ranging from journalism and poetry to lecturing and storytelling, as well as pioneering the detective genre with "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" in 1841—his work did not receive widespread recognition until "The Raven" was published in 1845. This poem's immediate success significantly raised his profile in literary circles. However, his personal life was defined by hardship, including enduring poverty, health struggles, and Virginia's death in 1847, which contributed to his own decline. In 1849, Poe was discovered in a dire state at a tavern in Baltimore. After being taken to a hospital, he lingered for four days but never regained consciousness and passed away on October 7 at the age of 40. Despite being one of America's most original literary figures, Poe's genius was often overshadowed by his troubled reputation. It was only when Charles Baudelaire translated his works that a broader European audience began to appreciate his talent, ultimately influencing notable writers such as Dostoevsky, Conan Doyle, and Jules Verne.
