Zofia Abramowiczówna - sylwetka autora
Born in 1906 in Vilnius, she pursued classical philology studies at the local university and later in Berlin, where she deepened her understanding of ancient art. In 1937, she earned her doctorate in Vilnius under the supervision of Professor Stefan Srebrny, focusing her thesis on the Homeric Hymns. After the war, in 1945, she moved to Toruń and was employed as an assistant professor at the newly established Department of Classical Philology at Nicolaus Copernicus University. However, in 1949, she was dismissed from her position due to ideological-political reasons. Despite these challenges, she achieved her habilitation in 1951, based on her commentary on selected works of Plutarch's Moralia. She returned to the university in 1956 as an associate professor in the Department of Classical Philology. Nevertheless, due to political issues, she awaited her professorship appointment until 1973. She passed away in 1988 in Warsaw. Her scholarly contributions include numerous specialized studies on Greek literature, as well as translations of important works by Virgil and Plutarch. Most notably, she was the editor of the monumental Greek-Polish Dictionary, published in four volumes by PWN, Warsaw, from 1958 to 1965.
