Szmuel Lejb Sznajderman - sylwetka autora
A reporter, journalist, translator, and poet known for his works in Yiddish began his career as a reporter for "Literarisze Bleter." In 1934, he took on the role of correspondent for the Polish Jewish press based in Paris. In the summer of 1936, he returned to Poland to cover the trial of the Przytyk pogrom. When the Spanish Civil War erupted, he traveled to Spain to document the conflict, gaining recognition as the "first Jewish war correspondent." Between 1938 and 1939, he was in South Africa, continuing his journalistic contributions to Jewish newspapers. During World War II, he relocated with his family to New York, integrating with the Yiddish-speaking intellectual community. After the Holocaust, he was among the first Jewish writers to revisit Poland, capturing his experiences in the collection of reports titled "Cwiszn szrek un hofenenung (a rajze iber najem Pojln)," published in 1947. Post-war, he also published "The Warsaw Heresy," an account of life in Poland over three years following October 1956. His talents extended to screenwriting, notably with the 1966 film "The Last Chapter," which explored Jewish life in Poland prior to the Holocaust. From 1975 to 1978, he served as the chairman of the Yiddish PEN Center in the United States. In 1994, he moved to Israel, where he passed away.
