The American writer and journalist was born in Cleveland but grew up in London and New York. He has authored four prose books: "Sisters," "Why the Tree Loves the Ax," "The King is Dead," and "The Ghosts of New York." His writings on visual arts have been featured in various magazines, including "Artforum," "Parkett," and "Harper’s Bazaar." He has also played a significant role in organizing monographic exhibitions for numerous artists in museums worldwide, such as Jeff Koons at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Larry Clark at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. His journalistic work has appeared in publications like "The New York Times," "Slate," "Rolling Stone," "GQ," and "Vanity Fair." His essays have been published in literary magazines such as "Granta" and "The Tin House." He co-authored the book "Real Gone" with photographer Jack Pierson and partnered with painter Cecily Brown on "The English Garden." Additionally, he collaborated with Larry Clark on the screenplay for the film "Kids." Currently, he resides in Austin, Texas.
