This monograph explores how Jews were represented in various academic journals and popular gazettes published in French in the United Provinces of the Netherlands, primarily by Huguenot refugees. These sources, which have often been overlooked by researchers, offer valuable insights for further study. The scholarly journals largely delve into historical and theological discussions concerning Jewish people and Judaism, examining the roots of their language, its impact on other languages, and their religious customs and practices. Meanwhile, the popular gazettes focus on rumors and current events, presenting Jews as perceived by the editors. The study identifies several distinct portrayals of Jews in these publications. Special emphasis is placed on the concept of privacy, providing an analytical framework to deepen the understanding of these portrayals. The book concludes by analyzing the depiction of Muslims in general, especially Turks, and the Siamese, in the same sources, to see if their portrayals differ from those of the Jews.
