This narrative, as recounted by Leandro the Mighty, unfolds on Earth 400 years after it has become a desolate wasteland. The few remaining humans struggle for survival in the harsh city of Pocatel, or brave the wilds beyond, rife with wandering spirits and deadly wyrms. Survival in these conditions is fleeting. Leandro, a 13-year-old pickpocket, and his sister Gabi, strive to carve out a living in Pocatel despite the city’s animosity towards the Cascabel—descendants of those who had long toiled in the San Joaquin Valley. When Gabi is apprehended for pilfering rare fruit from the Pocatelan elite, Leandro steps in to take the blame. His ensuing exile, however, turns out to be far more than a mere punishment; his consciousness is transferred into an ancient drone, forced to navigate the perilous landscape alone. Beyond the confines of Pocatel, other alebrijes like Leandro dream of crafting a better world. Yet, the path is fraught with dangers: mutant creatures, wasteland pirates, and the promise of hidden oases—and perhaps even the truth.
