Alfredo and Luigi spent their childhood in Valsesia, a region in northern Italy. To celebrate their births, their father planted trees: Luigi received a larch, known for its sunward stretch and gentle movements in the wind, while Alfredo was given a fir, a tree that thrives in the shadows. After their father's sudden death, the brothers share little more than a penchant for heavy drinking and the old family home perched on the mountainside. Luigi dreams of buying out Alfredo, hoping to move from the valley to a mountain life with Elisabetta and their soon-to-arrive daughter. However, in this isolated and rugged area, an excess of alcohol or a wrong word can quickly escalate tensions, turning friends as loyal as dogs into adversaries as fierce as wolves.
