I was born in Brazil in 1964 and began drawing as soon as I could grasp a pencil. By the age of five, I had already decided that I wanted to become a cartoonist, a dream I eagerly shared with my parents. I sketched on any surface I deemed worthy, from church bulletins to napkins, and created my own mini-comics with original characters. I drew every cartoon character and comic hero I admired on TV and in comics.
At eleven, I created Frederick the Detective for my local newspaper, handling every aspect of the comic strip, from the storyline to the lettering, pencils, and inks. I won a contest the newspaper hosted for kids my age and enjoyed bringing the strip to life. It became popular at school, and my friends were always curious about the next installment. Each weekly strip varied in length, with some stories spanning two chapters and others up to four. I continued this until I turned fourteen, although my interests expanded to include activities like beach outings, guitar playing, and working out. Despite this, I never stopped drawing and began producing political caricatures for the same paper, Diario De Pernambuco.
In 1982, while browsing through an issue of Batman (#350), an advertisement caught my eye. It depicted a caveman conversing with a peculiar bird: "Have you heard about it? The Joe Kubert School?" Instantly, I realized that this was the perfect place for me. I started saving money and learning English to pursue my dream. I was a fan of Joe Kubert's work since I first saw his rendition of Tarzan. In 1986, while attending the Word of Life Bible Institute, I had the incredible opportunity to interview with Joe Kubert himself over the phone. I was ecstatic to be accepted.
Though personal reasons forced me to take a break from school, I returned in 1990 and won the Dark Horse Scholarship for my second year. Interestingly, my brother began working in comics for the US market before I did, even while based in Brazil. He did some projects for Caliber Press and mentioned me to them. While still in school, I was contacted to work on "Dagon, the Worlds of HP Lovecraft," marking the beginning of my American comic book career. Some of my classmates assisted me, which allowed us to skip some homework assignments.
