On the morning of October 7, while staying in Bethesda near Washington, I visited Basia and Marek, Polish Jews and March 68 migrants whose parents had survived the Holocaust. Our breakfast was suddenly disturbed by a phone call, followed by a series of updates regarding the dire situation facing my hosts' Israeli family and friends. This was when people were beginning to learn about the kibbutzim that had been attacked, as well as recognizing the hostages whose images would repeatedly appear in the news. Among them were Naama Levy, seen in bloody pajama bottoms with her hands bound, Shani Louk, who was tied up in the back of a pickup truck, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who had lost a forearm to a grenade, and Eden Yerushalmi, a bartender from the Nova Music Festival, one of the sites of the most brutal massacres. It is now known that none of these individuals survived.
