During the autumn of 1916, the Great War rages into its third year. Platon Chechel, once a police officer, now serves in the military. However, his enlistment is a façade; he is tasked with uncovering war crimes behind the lines for the command. His journey brings him to the provincial town of Chernihiv, where he finds himself embroiled in a sensitive personal mission. He must deliver a substantial amount of money to criminals to procure evidence against Julia, the daughter of a local landowner, implicating her in the murder of a wealthy lover. Chechel finds himself unintentionally caught in the web of the criminal and political underworld, triggering a series of violent murders. He narrowly escapes death himself. Concurrently, Julia vanishes mysteriously from a monastery, where she had gone to seek atonement for her sins.
