The text explores the formation of the cultural identity of the Kurpies, a community situated in the forest-rich region of north-eastern Mazovia since the late 17th century. Central to this study are the concepts of family and collective memory, along with their methods of transmission. These elements have enabled the Kurpies to preserve their cultural heritage, grounded in the passing of traditional values across generations. The work incorporates a variety of sources, including archival and memoir materials (dating back to the 18th century), as well as analyses of how the Kurpies have been perceived externally within elite discourses from the early 19th century to the period between World Wars. Additionally, it includes post-World War II documentation and research findings, together with the author's personal insights and interviews with numerous local leaders and experts.
