As someone who is the wrong side of older, my journey as a journalist and writer began at the age of 17. By 19, I ventured to Vietnam with the lofty ambition of covering the war. I was driven by the notion, inspired by Hemingway, that to truly be a writer, one must experience the depths of intoxication, heartache, and the chaos of war. I fancied I had mastered the first two and eagerly sought the third. After enduring 18 months in the field, I vowed never to indulge in such reckless pursuits again.
Since that intense chapter, my professional life has been centered in the tranquility of Scotland, making a living through the written word. Occasionally, I have found myself straying from this safety net, visiting Sarajevo, Romania, Albania, and Kosovo. These trips were attempts to appease my conscience and affirm my identity as a genuine journalist, not confined to tabloid trivialities. To my relief, I discovered many aspiring journalists who preferred the safety of hiring someone like me to undertake the more perilous tasks.
Driven by an insatiable thirst for adventure and a passion for ancient warfare, I embraced horseback riding and taught myself horse archery. Eventually, residing in an area rich in Viking heritage, I delved into the world of historical reenactment. I became a member of The Vikings group, immersing myself in roles that ranged from a Norse trader to a Pictish chieftain, even taking on the persona of a wise and venerable Hospitaller, complete with sword and shield.
