After completing high school in Kufstein, Josef Mitterer pursued philosophical studies in Innsbruck before shifting to sociology at Linz from 1968 to 1971. Between 1971 and 1972, he lived in rural Southern England, focusing primarily on exploring the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein. From 1973 to 1978, he was engaged in philosophical studies in Graz, during which he completed research internships at the London School of Economics under Imre Lakatos and at the University of California, Berkeley with Paul Feyerabend. In 1978, he obtained a doctorate from Graz with his dissertation titled "Sprache und Wirklichkeit. Eine erkenntnistheoretische Abbhandlung." In the subsequent years, Mitterer lectured on philosophy at the universities of Klagenfurt and Innsbruck. Additionally, he worked as a manager in tourism ventures across Europe, Asia, and North America. He held visiting professorships at several universities and, since 1999, has been a professor at the University of Klagenfurt.
