The Swiss theologian and Catholic cleric, who was destined to be elevated to the rank of cardinal, held honorary doctorates from theological institutions in Edinburgh, Freiburg, Münster, and the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. In 1969, he was appointed as a member of the International Theological Commission and contributed to the founding of the journal "Communio." His work was recognized with the Paul VI Prize and the Mozart Prize. Over his lifetime, he authored an impressive collection of 90 books and 550 articles, as well as translating 100 works by other authors. His theological output was significantly influenced by his exchanges with Adrienne von Speyr, a Swiss physician, mystic, and visionary, whose perspectives left a profound mark on his ideas.
