Professor Gary Michael Gutting, an esteemed American philosopher, was born in St. Louis. He completed his studies in philosophy at Saint Louis University. Gutting was an expert in both continental and analytical philosophy and extensively explored the works and ideas of Michel Foucault. For many years, he taught at the University of Notre Dame and took on the role of editor for the "Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews." He was a member of the American Philosophical Association and the Philosophy of Science Association. Among his notable publications are "Paradigms and Revolutions: Appraisals and Applications of Thomas Kuhn's Philosophy of Science" (1980), "Pragmatic Liberalism and the Critique of Modernity" (1999), "Foucault: A Very Short Introduction" (2005), and "Talking God: Philosophers on Belief" (2016). He was married to Anastasia Marie Friel from June 26, 1965, until his passing on January 18, 2019. Together, they had three children: a daughter named Tasha and two sons, Edward and Thomas, often called "Tom."
