Donella Meadows, whose groundbreaking contributions during the 1970s continue to resonate today, was a visionary scientist, writer, educator, and farmer. Renowned as a leading systems analyst, she was the principal author of the seminal work "Limits to Growth," published in 1972. This book examined global trends concerning population growth, economic development, and environmental impacts. It garnered international acclaim, being translated into 28 languages and sparking ongoing global discourse about Earth's capacity to endure continuous human expansion.

Two decades after the release of "Limits to Growth," Meadows collaborated with Dennis Meadows and Jorgen Randers to produce a follow-up study, published under the title "Beyond the Limits." Their research culminated in "Limits to Growth: The 30-Year Update," released in 2004. Meadows' influential contributions to science, communication, and the sustainability movement were recognized through various prestigious accolades, including a MacArthur Foundation "genius" award and the title of Pew Scholar in Conservation and the Environment. Esteemed institutions such as the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the Conservation Law Foundation have also honored her work.

Meadows is perhaps best remembered for her widely-read weekly column, "The Global Citizen," which ran for 16 years and earned a Pulitzer Prize nomination. Known affectionately as Dana to those close to her, she was a dedicated educator at Dartmouth College, where she taught environmental systems, ethics, and journalism. Living near her organic farm, she actively managed, Meadow's commitment to sustainability extended beyond academia.

She founded the Sustainability Institute and co-founded the International Network of Resource Information Centers, also known as the Balaton Group. Her leadership inspired individuals across various sectors to rethink their approaches, embrace systems thinking, and pursue sustainability. Tragically, Donella Meadows passed away unexpectedly in 2001 while finalizing her book "Thinking in Systems."
