The American writer, known for his crime novels and screenwriting, grew up in Boston. Prior to dedicating himself fully to writing, he held various jobs including a caretaker for mentally disabled and abused children, waiter, parking lot attendant, limousine driver, bookstore clerk, and truck loader. His debut novel, "A Drink Before the War," earned the Shamus Award in 1995. Since then, he has published nine novels, translated into over 30 languages, which have become bestsellers. Among these successful titles are "Darkness, Take My Hand," "Sacred," "Gone, Baby, Gone," "Prayers for Rain," "Mystic River," "Shutter Island," "The Given Day," "Moonlight Mile," and "Live by Night." Additionally, he contributed as a co-writer for the renowned HBO series "The Wire," and worked as both a screenwriter and producer on HBO's "Boardwalk Empire." He also produced the AT&T series "Mr. Mercedes," adapted from Stephen King's work.
