I was born in Somerset and spent my childhood in a village along the Blackwater estuary in Essex. Those early years are filled with memories of walking along shingle beaches and exploring mudflats, surrounded by the grey-green hues of heather and salt marshes. My friends and I would often spend our days adventuring along the sea-walls, accompanied by the constant calls of seagulls.
Later, as an adult, I moved to Suffolk. It was there that I pursued an MA in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. After completing my degree, my husband and I decided to move, along with our two young daughters, to purchase a property in southwest France. I initially planned to dedicate time to writing a novel, but our new home turned out to be more of a fixer-upper than anticipated, which meant I spent the early years there learning skills like mixing concrete. In addition to renovating the house, we needed to learn the French language, help our daughters adapt to their new school environment, and navigate the challenges of living far from family and friends.
Eventually, we settled in and made a home. During this time, I completed my first novel, 22 Britannia Road, which achieved international bestseller status. My latest book, Spilt Milk, was released in February 2014 by Penguin Books, and later this summer, a novella titled Tin Town is set to be published by Grand Central Penguin US. I'm also currently working on my third novel.
