Alan Maley has dedicated over four decades to the field of TESL. His journey began at the University of Leeds during the early 1960s, where he studied under the guidance of Peter Strevens. He then embarked on a long career as an English Language Officer with the British Council, a role that spanned 25 years and took him to various countries including Yugoslavia, Ghana, Italy, France, China, and India.
In 1988, Maley transitioned from the British Council to become the Director-General of the Bell Educational Trust in Cambridge, holding the position for five years. In 1993, Maley accepted a role as a Senior Fellow at the National University of Singapore's Department of English Language and Literature. He spent five years there before moving on to establish and manage a Master's program in ELT at Assumption University in Bangkok between 1999 and 2004. Currently, Maley balances his time as a Visiting Professor at Leeds Metropolitan University, engaging in writing, conducting short-term teaching assignments primarily in Southeast Asia, and pursuing freelance consultancy.
His contributions to publishing have been notable, with a focus on creating resource books for teachers. Presently, he is researching the phenomena of repetition and reformulation in language teaching. Maley's publications with Cambridge University Press include works like "Drama Techniques" (co-authored with Alan Duff), "A Tangled Web," "He Knows Too Much," and "The Best of Times?"
